Jim Yost
Jim, along with his wife Joan, left for Irian Jaya (now called Papua), Indonesia in February of 1977. After a short period of Indonesian language study and culture adjustment, they pioneered a church planting work among the northern Sawi and Asmat tribes located in the southern lowlands of Irian Jaya. They established a center of operations in the village of Comoro and through God’s grace were able to quickly learn the Sawi tribal language and closely identify with the culture of those people. After three years of investing their lives, Jim and Joan saw God’s Spirit come and visit their village in a spiritual awakening that ushered hundreds of people into God’s Kindgom.
A church was born and continues to grow to this day. Their ministry has included some Bible translation, developing literacy materials and conducting a literacy-Bible school, opening and conducting medical clinics where people can come to receive medical treatment for a wide variety of wounds and diseases, promoting agricultural and domesticated animal projects to increase the diet and affect the health of the people, and leadership training which has brought the church to self-sufficiency and caused a village evangelistic outreach program to reach two neighboring tribes with the Gospel.
After 17 years in an interior tribal location, Jim and Joan, along with their three daughters, moved to a coastal town called Sentani where they are now involved in cell church planting among troubled youth, who are migrating in large numbers to coastal cities, as well as to prostitutes, prison inmates and broken familes. The power of God to transform broken lives has been evidenced in a church of 700 people being birthed in the town of Sentani, as well as other church plants into four other cities in Papua. Jim’s growing burden is to catalyze church planting movements in Papua, throughout Indonesia and beyond. He is actively involved in training cross cultural workers as well as newly emerging churches throughout Indonesia and South East Asia in principles of rapid multiplication and has sent many Papuan “missionaries” out to be a blessing to the Nations!
